There is no such thing as cheap solar energy. Solar cells are very expensive and energy intensive to create, and so is the infrastructure to supply that power. I know, I've got solar panels and wind turbines which I built and installed myself as cheap as you can get. I done it to be self sufficient and green, but don't kid yourself that it is cheap, it's not, and it will never be as cheap as coal. The only way we will be able to switch to renewables is if everyone substantially reduces there consumption to about a quarter of their current use. A lot of this can come from increased efficiency, but a lot also must come from just plain old doing without power consuming luxeries.

the worlds scientists need to educate the entire world about the carnage to the food chain caused by long held beliefs about shark cartilage, shark fin soup etc. It is hard to believe that as many people still market such stagnant beliefs about value. organizations need tshow the worlds peoples that shark fin are of no medicinal value. preserving the existance of some out dated fishing industry is absurd. Pay these people to work in preservation. Pay the fish boats to clean up ocean trash. Let the worlds nations pay for this garbage collection.

Watch out for digital timers... they use can 15w/hrs which is often more than the energy saving lamp (in my case) they are powering! it would be cheaper to leave the the lamp on 24/7. Doesnt sound like much but thats 2.5kw a week which is one use of both the dishwasher AND the washing machine - for nothing. Surprisingly, the old style mechanical timers use much less - they dont even show up on my energy reader (Efergy).
